nuts n bolts. (adding a link to a wordpress entry)

Just a quick tutorial for a new blogger friend on how to add hyperlinks to a wordpress blog post:

You’ll probably want to use the full edit “Add New” Post box, rather than the Quick Edit one. The full edit one gives you all the tools.

First, copy the link that you want to paste into your blog post. Now you’re ready to proceed.

1. Enter your text into the Add New Post box as you usually do, and then highlight the word or words that you want to contain the link.

2. Click on the little “chain-link” icon in your toolbox. Here you see it in my mac Safari version; it may be in a different place in a different version but it should be someplace accessible.

3. A pop-up box appears. Now Paste the link into the top box. The bottom box (called “Title”) is unnecessary, but if you want to put some text in here, it will show up for anyone who hovers their cursor over the text before clicking.

That’s it! Click “Add Link” and you’re done!

(the “broken” chain link icon next to the one you’ve just used is for removing a link if you ever change your mind. Highlight the underlined text, click on the broken link, and voila! the link is removed.)

  1. I’m sure this is super helpful for all the wordpress bloggers!

I’m a fellow campaigner in your historical group. Just stopping by to say hi!

  2. Thanks clickerbug! 🙂 I knew it worked for linking posts but not for any old text that you want to link to. So in that case you copy and paste the link first and then write the text? And cover the text with you link?
I’d appreciate it if you could answer that question cause that’s where I get confused. Appreciate heaps
    See you around the campaign.

    • I’m not exactly sure what you’re asking. Are you wondering if you can link to a certain spot of text on a page? If so, I don’t know how to do that. I only know how to link to a whole page, as described. If you want it to link to a certain piece of text, like this, then you follow the directions I provided.

  3. Will give it a go clickerbug…. thanks for your help.

  4. yes that’s the answer. You just gave it.. that is what i meant. thanks
